ABOUT THE NORWALK, CONNECTICUT AREA 

Independently established in 1651 and pleasantly tucked between the Norwalk and Saugatuck Rivers, Norwalk is an exciting blend of lovely residential neighborhoods, thriving commercial and industrial enterprises and exciting cultural and artistic activity. 

The panoramic scenery of the rivers and Long Island Sound are important parts of the appeal of Norwalk, both as desirable settings for residences and as sources of recreation. Luxurious seaside homes grace the coast of the Sound at Wilson Point, historic restorations are found along the banks of the rivers and a fine collection of traditional and contemporary houses are scattered throughout East Norwalk and West Norwalk, Rowayton and Silvermine. As home to the largest yachting marine in New England, Norwalk enjoys a rich selection of aquatic activities, including the annual In-Water Boat Show and the popular Oyster Festival in September. The beautiful beaches of Norwalk and Rowayton provide an abundance of watersports and sunbathing, as well as delightful freshwater harbors on Five Mile River. Excellent town parks and an active recreation department offer a wide range of leisure and sporting events. 

The superior marine facilities of Norwalk also provide valuable employment to residents as part of the lively tourist trade. Additional business and industrial opportunities include corporate offices, high technology research and development and a variety of manufacturers. Commercial and cultural establishments also abound in town, particularly in the revitalized South Norwalk Seaport district (SONO).
 

Nostalgic nineteenth century buildings have been restored to house a select group of galleries, restaurants and shops. The Maritime Center delights visitors of all ages with an aquarium, entertaining marine exhibits, seamanship courses and an IMAX Theater. The renowned SONO Art Show is held at the Seaport each year. 

Additional points of interest include the Norwalk Museum and the 1864 Lookwood-Mathews Mansion, which feature impressive collections of period art and Americana, and the Silvermine Guild Arts Center. The Norwalk Symphony performs throughout the year. 

The quality of life in Norwalk is further enhanced by a solid public school system. A traditional curriculum is complemented by global studies including foreign language classes, computer science and a center for Japanese language and culture study. Private parochial instruction is also available.
